Dear Major Furae,
Many thanks for your letter of 13th inst. regarding the Hong Kong appointment.
The difficulty as you know has not been to get a man at the salary £600-20-800 but to get a man at all.
In ur. Dawe's case the question of salary was raised
because of his being so peculiarly suitable a candidate
for the post and now that Hong Kong has thrown away the
chance of securing him there seems no need to offer the
larger salary. If I knew of anyone who could be recommended
I should gladly send forward his name for consideration
wut I have to say quite frankly that at this moment I
camot think of anyone who combines the qualifications
requisite in one who has to conduct forestry operations as well as to look after the other duties of the post. I am
making enquiries and will let you know the result as soon
as possible.
R. D. Furse, D.S.0., Colonial Office,
Downing Street,
S. W. 1.
Yours sincerely,
L. Prain
